Day 01: Arrive in Chengdu
Today we arrive in Chengdu, the capital of province Sichuan, the hometown of Panda, transfer to hotel. Overnight at Chengdu.
Day 02: Air Chengdu – Lhasa (B)
In the morning transfer to airport, fly to Lhasa (CA4401 0730/0920), the Capital of Tibet. Upon arrival at the Gongga airport, take another 1.5-hour-drive to the city proper (3650 m). On the way you will enjoy the spectacular scenery, and the typical Tibetan villages as well as the Yak-skin-boat cruising on Yalung Tsangpo River. After lunch stay at the hotel for adapting to the high attitude. It is helpful to take things easy for the first few days, and try to drink some water just and now. Overnight at Lhasa.
Day 03: Lhasa (B/L)
In the morning visit Drepung monastery the sacred land of Gelug Sect., which was established in 1416 and the second, third and fourth Dalai Lama once resided in. In the afternoon visit Sera monastery, which was created in 1419 and has always been an important Buddhist seminary. As rose are planted everywhere in the monastery, it is also called “the court of wild rose”. Today still 200 lamas live in there. Overnight at Lhasa.
Day 04: Lhasa (B/L)
In the morning visit Potala, which was originally constructed in 637 by Songtsen Gampo, the first king of the united Tibet, and later expanded and served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas as well as the religious-political nexus of traditional Tibet. The crowds of pilgrims, innumerable magnificent murals, Buddhist statues, scriptures and rare treasures altogether create a dense religious and art atmosphere that impresses every visitor. In the afternoon visit Jokhang monastery, the center of the Tibetan Buddhism and the sacred land of Buddhist followers where thousands of pilgrims come for worship everyday. The temple, built in 647, is the earliest wood-and-masonry structure still existing in Tibet. Walk on the Barkhor street surrounding Jokhang, a big free market with its prolific stalls for selling local specialties. Overnight at Lhasa.
Day 05: Lhasa – Gandan – Lhasa (B/L)
In the morning drive to visit Ganden Monastery, which was built by Tsongkhaba in present-day Dagaze County to the east of Lhasa in 1409 soon after the Monlam Festival was over. Gandan is one of the three main monasteries of Gelug Sect. Anyhow, different from Drepung and Sera, it once played a more prominent political role in Tibetan history. The abbot of this monastery possess of a high religious position within the system of Gelug Sect, just inferior to Dalai and Panchan. The monastery was reconstructed in 1993 and restored its original appearance. The holy stupa of Tsongkhaba is just in the monastery. In the afternoon drive back Lhasa. Overnight at Lhasa.
Day 06: Lhasa – Reting (B/L/D)
In the morning head for Reting Monastery 180 kilometers north to Lhasa. Have lunch on the way. The monastery Reting lies in the midst of an expanse of cypress forest. It was established in 1057 by Drom Toenpa, Atisha’s most important pupil. It was said the cypress forest had developed from a tuft of hair from Drom Toenpa, who buried that beneath the soil here. Drom Toenpa and his successors developed the monastery into a preaching base of the Kadam Sect founded in the mid-11th century. In the 15th century when Tsongkhaba founded the Gelug Sect on the basis of the Kadam doctrines, this monastery was gradually converted to the Gelug Sect. The last Reting Rinpotsche (monk scholar) served as a regent in the time of the 14th Dalai Lama. In May the Saga Dawa Festival was held here. It is said that Sakyamuni was born, enlightened and passed away all on the same date: the 15th of May. So various activities were held in this month to commemorate Sakyamuni. Gradually these ceremonies developed into the large-scale Zhuanjing activities. Zhuanjing is a form of praying ceremony; while praying, the pilgrims walk along in certain route around some sacred religious object. The visitors can take part in such activities, like walking outside of the monastery complex along the Lingkhor (outside Zhuanjing route; approx. 1 hour). In the afternoon visit the Reting Monastery or villages down the Kyichu River valley. Overnight the first time in tent.
Day 07: Reting – Nam Tso - Bali Village - Duojia Temple (B/L/D)
In the morning drive on rugged road before reach the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. Pass by Damxung town and the 5,150-meter Lhachen La and reach Duojia the biggest temple by the Nam Tso Lake, which was built in 1716. The enigma of this temple is that you hear the sound of stone carving but when you approach the sound disappear, and as long as you go away you hear it again. Nam Tso, or Tengri Nor (heaven lake in Mongolian), the biggest salty lake of Tibet, is 70 kilometers long from east to west and 30 kilometers wide from north to south, covering an area of 1,920 square kilometers with an altitude of 4,700 meters above sea level. It is said the holy lake and the holy mountain Nyenchentangla are a couple of lovers, who altogether guard the vast pasture and cattle. Camping.
Day 08: Trekking Duojia – Buguzhari - Bularanka (B/L/D)
Bukuranri is the miracle of the world in the minds of the local people. Inside the caves in this area, you see numerous images of birds, animals, trees, flowers, clouds, characters, etc. So strange it is! These images change constantly, sometimes clear and faint after some while. Camping.
Day 09: Trekking Buguzhari - Angbakonglong Island (B/L/D)
On the Holy Qiaduonanka Island, there are many naturally made Buddhist images and characters as well as many caves. The remains of the former Qiaduo temple, which had been destructed during the Cultural Revolution, faces toward the Nyenchentangla Mountain ridges. Several erected giant stones are regarded as the entrance door of the holy mountain. Spectacular it is. During today’s journey, we see lots of Mongolian gazelles and blue sheep on the way. Camping.
Day 10: Trekking Angbakonglong Island – Jiachangcuiguo - No.1 Camp (B/L/D)
Jiachangcuiguo is regarded as one of the Four Great Bathing Gate of the Holy Nam Tso Lake. It is believed by the people that having bathing and baptism in this holy lake will help them be extricated from the sin and bring luck and longevity upon them. The soft sand by the lake is somewhat hard to walk on. Camping.
Day 11: Trekking No.1 Camp - Nam Village - Tashi Peninsula (B/L/D)
The approaching of Tashi Pninsula means the completion of walking around the holy lake. Tashi Peninsula is the biggest one among the inlands of Nam Tso Lake. Explore the Tashi peninsula by walking around the holy hill, the cliffs of which have eroded over the centuries. Also we’ll visit Tashi Dorje, a cave temple of Nyingma Sect at the southeast of the Tashi peninsula. Camping.
Day 12: Nam Tso Lake – Yangpachen - Lhasa (B/L/D)
In the morning walk around the peninsula and then drive back to Lhasa. Pass by Yangbajing, the highest-altitude hot springs in the world, 90 kilometers northwest of Lhasa. This area is rich in terrestrial heat and densely distributed with various fountains, geysers, hot springs, boiling springs as well as hot-water lakes. It is a wonderful enjoyment to take a bath in the high-quality hot springs. Subsequently, we reach Lhasa. Overnight at Lhasa.
Day 13: Air Lhasa – Chengdu (B)
In the morning free. Transferred to the airport in the morning and fly back to Chengdu. End of services.
