Tilarakot is situated 25 kms west of Lumbini and 3 kms north of bustling village of Taulihawa.  It is believed to be the capital of Kapilbastu, where Lord Buddha spent 29 years of his life.  Though fewer people visit this place, there are many sites of great historical significance.  The remains can be seen everywhere that include stupas, fort gates, old city walls and moat.  There are two Ashokan Pillars erected to commemorate the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautam.  The eastern gate is considered very important as Buddha passed through this gate while he left to attain enlightenment.  There is a small museum containing some pottery found in the area and coins (around 3,000BC). This museum is open daily except Tuesday.
