Bhutan is a small landlocked country and is still regarded as one of the last shangrilas in the Himalayan region because of its remoteness. It is bounded on 3 sides by India and to the north by China. It has a total land area of 38,394 square kilometers. The landscape is charactirized by rugged terrain and steep mountain valleys ranging from 150 meters in the sub - tropical valleys in the southern foothills, through temperate zone to heights exceeding 7000 meters in the alpine regions of the mountains.
It has spectacular mountain terrain, varied flora and fauna and unique and ancient Buddhist monasteries. It is in the relatively unexplored pockets of Asia which allows only limited numbers of discerning travelers to enter the country in order to protect its fragile environment and culture.
